22 September, 2001:

(Report by Ian Wright)

Conditions were ideal for the four entrants – the day was warm, the grass had been cut at 7:00 that morning and the sun even came out in the afternoon.

The competition was played as a block with 3-hr time limits, at the suggestion of the players, but most games were well under 2½ hours.  Although the competition was for those with handicaps 10 or more, those who had entered were all 10, 11 or 12.  This close spread made the competition more enjoyable.

In the first round Stella McCraw, who was defending her title, beat Diana Trickey fairly comfortably, and Ian Wright beat Alan Wilson who just could not get going.

In the second round tables were turned to some extent.  Stella found Alan a very difficult opponent to beat but managed a close win in the only game to go to time.  Against Diana, Ian took his first ball to penult very quickly but Diana took her bisques and started scoring, reaching peg and 4-back before Ian managed to peg out.

Names had been entered alphabetically on the draw sheet and by coincidence that meant the two undefeated players, Stella and Ian, met in the third round.  Thus an outright winner was guaranteed.  Stella duly made sure that it was her.  Alan made two good breaks against Diana, including his first rover peel and peg out, to win the quickest game of the competition in little over an hour.
