FEC GC European Championship

The European Golf Croquet Championship was inaugurated in 1999, following the introduction of the revised WCF Golf Croquet Rules.  It takes place most years, except when there is another major Golf Croquet Championship in the world.

Simon Carlsson (Sweden) is the current champion.  In 2007, 2009 and 2010, Jamieson Walker did not qualify for the knock-out stage.  Scotland is entitled to nominate one player to the competition direct, and there are wild card opportunities also.

Reports:

7 – 9 October, 1999 at Leamington Spa:

(Report by Charlotte Townsend)

Rod Williams and Charlotte Townsend, in the absence of other volunteers, represented Scotland in this event.  Rod succeeded in getting through the initial block stage on Thursday, and into the play offs for the top sixteen; Charlotte was less successful, rapidly sinking to the bottom of her block.

Mark McInerney of Ireland seemed the likely winner almost from the start, easily defeating most of his opponents with superb straight hitting and (apparently) total confidence in his own abilities.  He lost only one game throughout the tournament, to Peter Payne of Switzerland.  In the final, he beat England’s John Moore in straight games, 7-3, 7-1, 7-5.

Ivor Brand beat Andrew Hutchinson (both England) for third place, while Peter Payne was the first continental European, pushing England’s Ed Dymock down into sixth place.  Tom Weston (England) beat Rod Williams into seventh place; Charlotte did not come last.

Despite our failure to win, this was a very enjoyable event, and I really would urge more people to try playing golf croquet in this sort of event.  Players of greatly varying abilities participate, and if you haven’t tried it, there’s a lot more strategy and skill involved with the new rules than you might at first think.
