Scottish Golf Croquet Championship 2016

Alan Wilson beat Dave Widdison in a play-off to become the Scottish Golf Croquet Champion.
Local players Bob Darling, George Geis, Jola Jurasinska, Jamieson Walker and manager Alan Wilson were joined by visitors Dave Widdison, from England, and Sue Truman, from New Zealand, for the Scottish Golf Croquet Championship. This gave a range of handicaps from Dave's -1 to George's 6. With seven players it was decided to play a seeded American Block with each match being a best of three and time limits of 1hr, 50min, 40min. Fortunately all games were finished although one or two took all but a few minutes of the time available.
On the Saturday the lawns were a bit slow after overnight rain but the day stayed dry and four rounds were completed by about 5.30 leaving Dave and Alan both undefeated on three wins with Bob also on three wins but having played four matches. The winners were as predicted by the rankings with Bob’s win over Jamieson being the only exception although George did well taking a game against Alan.
Overnight and on Sunday morning the rain was steady but the courts were still fine and games proceeded as planned. Results, though, were a different matter. Sue, a 5 handicap, beat Dave (-1) in the penultimate round. This meant that Alan had to beat Dave to win outright and Dave had to beat Alan to force a play-off. Games 1 and 2 were split between them with first Alan then Dave playing below par to give the other an easy victory. Game 3 was tense and close with both players making long clearances and running good hoops. It swung both ways until Alan ran hoop 12 to make it 6 all. Dave played a superb shot to get 4ft, wired position for hoop 13 and it was all over - except it wasn’t. With both players on five wins and one loss a play-off was required. Dave had a train to catch and there wasn’t enough time for another best of three, so it was agreed there would be one final game, a best of 19 points. Again both players were nip and tuck until, at 4 all, Alan hit inspired form and took a 9-4 lead. Dave made hoop 14 but Alan scored the next point to win 10-5 and become the Scottish Champion.
