Wilkinson Sword 2022

6 August 2022, Knightswood

Teams arrived at Knightswood from Glasgow, Auchincruive, Balgreen and Aberdeen & Crathes croquet clubs to compete for the Wilkinson Sword handicap doubles. The weather was changeable with sunshine in both the liquid and traditional format.

Due to time pressures a full all-play-all format was not practical so we had a draw for semi-finals and final.  The first round saw Balgreen drawn against Glasgow and Auchincruive against Aberdeen & Crathes with victories for Balgreen and Auchincruive.  This produced a final between Auchincruive and Balgreen which Auchincruive won after a low scoring game with a close finish.  Meanwhile Aberdeen & Crathes beat Glasgow 26-24 after a match-winning final turn by Bill Strachan.

The last round of matches was reduced to 14-point games where Balgreen beat Aberdeen & Crathes after an impressive round by Rosemary was followed by Derek doing the same and pegging her out leaving Roger to negotiate a three-ball break to win the match.  Auchincruive completed their grand slam by beating Glasgow 8-7.

The day finished with a trophy presentation in glorious sunshine.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the day.  Thank you to Brian Durward for laying the lawns and refereeing and to Gladys Speedie for her support.
