Meadows AC Open 2015

20-21 June 2015, Meadows

Some of the flowers of ScotlandJane Morrison won the Meadows Open from a field of 13 players with handicaps ranging from -½ to 12.   The weather forecast suggested some rain both days but we were lucky and it stayed dry virtually the whole weekend with some sun on both afternoons. Not quite “taps aff” but pleasantly warm.

The first round was seeded and resulted in wins for John Surgenor, Jane Morrison, Brian Murdoch, Robert Inder, Alan Wilson and Bob Darling over Jamieson Walker, Janice Duguid, Hamish Duguid, Barry Keen (visiting from Bowdon), Joe Lennon and Charlotte Townsend respectively with all players having opportunities and making some hoops.  In Round 2 Barry made short work of Joe, in less than an hour, with a triple peel. The other games were closer with wins for Jane, Martin, Janice, Brian and Alan. The finish of Alan and Bob’s game was the most exciting with Alan pegging two balls off leaving himself on penult with Bob for 2. He finally won +2 with Bob’s accurate hitting letting him run hoops from distance and score two hoops in a break at least 3 times.  Only a failed, angled, rover by Bob allowed Alan to peg out.

After Round 3 only Jane and Alan were undefeated with Jane also managing to win a fourth game.  Barry and Jamieson also completed four games with Barry achieving a second triple in his game against Charlotte. Janice and Joe started a fourth game and pegged down with 40 minutes remaining.

Sunday morning saw the undefeated players playing with Jane coming out victorious by continuing the combination of straight shooting and accurate break play she exhibited all weekend.

In the subsequent round Martin completed a triple against Janice; Jane won again, as did Alan and John, leaving Jane in uncatchable position on 6 wins from 6 games. John beat Alan in the play-off for runner up and the manager insisted Jane played Brian so that she had played all the low handicap players. Brian won!

Despite that Jane deservedly won the event with 6 from 7 having played the most consistent croquet of the weekend and John was runner up with 5 from 6.

Alan Wilson brought his handicap down to 2 on the Saturday and Joe Lennon brought his down to 11 on the Sunday

Handicaps ranged from -0.5 to 12, 10 games were won on time and 3 triple peels were completed although several other attempts came very close.
