CA of Ireland v SCA 2015

16-17 May 2015, Carrickmines

The SCA was comprehensively beaten 15-7 by an in-form CAI team at Carrickmines.   On paper the Irish had the stronger team

SCA CAI

Alan Wilson (2½) Evan Newell (0)
Robert Inder (4) Jane Morrison* (1)
Janice Duguid (5) Frank Martin (6)

and the Scots were suffering from injury worries with Alan Wilson having just had surgery on his hand.   However the Irish had Evan's new mallet ("guaranteed not to miss") on their side and were deserved winners with some strong performances, notably by Frank Martin.

The opening round of doubles was won by the Irish 3-0, though the game between Campbell & Janice and Jane & Frank was particularly close, going to a golden hoop.   Jane pegged out Campbell's ball with not much time remaining leaving Campbell and Janice ahead.   The Irish managed to claw their way back and when time was called the scores were level, but Jane managed to peg out her ball to gain the winning point.

The second round of the afternoon's singles was reduced to four games to allow the Martins to leave early and by Saturday evening the SCA were trailing 9-4 down, with the Irish needing just three more wins to regain the Appleton trophy.    Campbell and Janice managed to hold them off in the morning by beating Nathaniel and John, but Evan clinched the winning point shortly after lunch with a triple against Alan - not without incident as it required a tricky half jump for the rover peel.   Meanwhile Nathaniel playing Campbell on the same lawn looked set to complete an outrageous triple, which involved jawsing partner in 4-back from the south boundary and then rolling off hoop two from just north of one.    By the time he had peeled 4-back before three everything looked to be under control, but his ball curled away on the approach to three and the turn came to an end.   With a series of fine hit-ins Nathaniel regained the innings and completed the double peel to win +17 - though he too almost came to grief at rover when he snookered himself from his pioneer and had to jump over the intervening ball.

Our thanks are due to the Irish for their hospitality, and in particular to Nathaniel and Orla for hosting a fabulous dinner at their house on the Saturday evening and to Mary Dobbyn for the delicious teas.   We look forward to welcoming the Irish back to Scotland in 2016.
