SCA AC Interclub 2017

Aberdeen & Crathes won the AC inter-club league beating Meadows 1 2-0 in the final.

Final (played at Meadows on 24 September 2017)

Aberdeen & Crathes names first
John Owen (3) beat David Houston (4½) +4
Malcolm Robertson (16) beat Lyn Gilpin (16) +9T (16-7)

On the middle lawn, Lyn, having no bisques against Malcolm, was unable to correct the odd failure to hit in, or to run a hoop, so occasionally leaving him an opportunity here and there to set up a break.  Although Malcolm had no bisques either, he did manage to complete one four-ball break, which gave him a lead after an hour and a half, and which he then guarded with a number of safety plays.  Lyn, who played more skilfully than Malcolm for most of the game, set up a number of three-ball breaks, the last of these making two hoops in the closing minutes of the game. Unfortunately for Lyn, time was up - the agreed time limit had been set as 2 hours 40 minutes for the match, rather than the more usual three hours - before she was able to close the gap between the scores.

On the east lawn, David Houston arrived later than intended, having left his mallet at home.  We were already under time pressure as the Meadows club session was due to start at 2pm, so the timer was set at 2h 41m. David had 1½ bisques against John and used the half bisque early on before getting going with one ball.  He had made significant progress before John got a chance, but when John hit in he managed to conjure up a perfect 4-ball break, only to miss a 3-yard roquet going from hoop 4 to hoop 5 (it must have rolled off line!).  David then got yellow round to peg with the aid of a bisque and left John nothing easy.  Eventually, John got blue going and went round to rover. By this time, David was for 4-back and peg, so John declined to go through rover and peg him out, especially as time was short and he was going to need all 4 balls for a break with black.  David got his red clip onto penult, but finally John hit in with just a couple of minutes left on the clock.  John was 22-11 down at this point with black still for hoop 1 and knew that any mistake would be fatal.  However, he played an almost flawless break apart from a poor 4-back pioneer, and was able to complete the rover peel and peg out for a +4 win. Considering the importance of the match and the pressure he was under, John reckons it was possibly his best-ever break.
