Middle Bisquers 2017

10-11 June 2017, Kinightswood

Janice Duguid was the worthy winner of the 2017 SCA Middle Bisquers.  Janice was unbeaten throughout the course of the two day tournament which was played on three lawns in Knightswood Park, Glasgow.

Twelve entrants contested this year’s competition; unfortunately, Alastair Burn-Murdoch was unavailable to defend his title.

The weekend’s weather was definitely a mixed bag with periods of sunshine punctuated by showers and milky skies.  Morning play was slow with the lawns’ speed increasing significantly as each day progressed.

The event was managed by Alistair Malcolm who accepted a late recommendation to change the competition format from a Part Round Robin to a Flexible Swiss. This encouraged more entries and four players elected to take advantage of the flexibility to play only five games – the minimum to qualify for the trophy.  As Alistair was not familiar with managing a Flexible Swiss he enlisted the much-appreciated assistance of David Houston, who very effectively took over scoring and game allocation.

The full results are presented in the table below.  Notable were the successes of the highest handicappers: Rosemary Saunders Robertson and John Campbell who both won half of their ties (despite playing level) with John achieving a reduction of handicap to 12. The runner-up was John Owen whose handicap goes down to 5.  David Houston was third after a long break in heavy rain in his last turn against Brian Durward, thereby snatching a win from the jaws of defeat.

We thank the Glasgow Club for successfully hosting the tournament and to the ‘Glasgow Boys’ for their early morning efforts in setting out the lawns, ably assisted by early arrivals from Edinburgh.
