The Walker Cup 2007

8 September 2007, Meadows West

The tournament for the Walker Cup was played on Saturday 8 September in glorious sunshine in the morning and a fine autumn afternoon.

There were 11 players in this 10+ tournament, with handicaps ranging from 10 to 20.  It was particularly pleasing to see a mix of old hands and new blood.  Four rounds were played to a full bisques format (base 10), modified to fit the 18 point game.

Inevitably there were one or two mistakes in not moving the second clip to 3 back when the first hoop was scored and a few hoops 'scored' in the wrong direction, but mistakes were equally shared by experienced and newer players.

The draw for the first round produced an amazing set of well matched pairings and consequently some close results.  Results diverged rather more in later rounds but the eventual winner, Duncan Reeves, was very consistent in winning all his games.  He thought he might have earned a reduction of handicap from 16 to 14 but wasn't sure until he'd checked his index at home.  Two players who definitely reduced their handicaps by the end of the day were Joe Lennon (from 10 to 9) and Morven Wardley (from 18 to 16).

Full results were as follows (starting handicaps in brackets).

Duncan Reeves (16) beat Marjorie Elliott (16) +6T, Morven Wardley (18) +4T, Campbell Thomson (14) +16, Robert Inder (20) +6T.
Morven Wardley won 3 out of 4 games, beating Joe Henderson (20) +10, Jean Forshall (20) +16, Campbell Thomson +11, and losing only to Duncan Reeves.
Robert Inder won 2 out of 3 games (one bye), beating Brian Cosford (20) +8T, Jean Forshall +4T and losing to Duncan Reeves.
Joe Lennon won 2 out of 3 games (one bye), beating Robert Lay (11) +4, Jola Jurasinska (20) +12 and losing to Campbell Thomson.
Jean Forshall won 2 out of 4 games, beating Jola Jurasinska +7T, Marjorie Elliott +8T and losing to Robert Inder and Morven Wardley.
Jola Jurasinska won 2 out of 4 games, beating Brian Cosford +6T, Marjorie Elliott +2T and losing to Jean Forshall and Joe Lennon.
Campbell Thomson won 2 out of 4 games, beating Joe Lennon +5T, Robert Lay +3T and losing to Duncan Reeves and Morven Wardley.
Joe Henderson won one out of 3 games (one bye), beating Brian Cosford +4T and losing to Morven Wardley and Marjorie Elliott.
Robert Lay won one out of 3 games (one bye), his only win of the season he says, beating Brian Cosford +10, and losing to Campbell Thomson and Joe Lennon.
Marjorie Elliott won one out of 4 games, beating Joe Henderson +5T and losing to Duncan Reeves, Jola Jurasinska and Jean Forshall.
Brian Cosford recorded no wins but gradually cut his losing scores until he came up against experienced opposition (Robert Lay) in the 4th round.
