Basil Townsend Quaich 2005

28 May 2005, Auchincruive

The Townsend Quaich is an interclub event traditionally played at Auchincruive.  This year we had five representatives from Auchincruive, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Meadows and Powfoulis.  To fit the competition into one day we played 18 point games with a 90 minute time limit.  Only one of the ten games went to time.  The weather is normally tropical for this event, but the Gods failed to smile and a blustery day was enhanced by a few squally showers.  The redoubtable Malcolm P W Smith Memorial Pavilion provided heat and shelter as well as aiding the preparation of a substantial afternoon tea.

Steven Boyne (Meadows) was much fancied to win, but used up his bisques too quickly in his first round match against David Arnot (Auchincruive) and lost by 5.  Joe Lennon (Glasgow) beat Dale Lyon (Powfoulis) by 9.  Allan Hawke (Edinburgh) appeared for the second round and proceeded to beat Dale by 9, while David beat Joe by 8.  In the third round Allan beat Joe by 2 on time and Steven beat Dale by 16.  Steven went two better in the next round beating Allan by 18 while David struggled to beat Dale by 5.

Dale had managed to lose all his games by this point, but at least achieved his main objective for the day by leaving at 3:30 for a 5pm sportsman's dinner in Lochgelly where we hope he managed to spread the word on our beautiful game.

All was to play for in the final round.  Allan could win by beating David, but only if Joe beat Steven.  Steven quickly proceeded to whitewash Joe by 18 and then started supporting Allan, because a victory for Allan would result in 3 way tie which Steven would win on points.  David was spurred on by this treachery and managed to overcome Allan by 2 in a game where fluid play gave way to extreme scrappiness and mutual gifts of the final hoops.

So the final results were:-
David 4 wins +20 points
Steven 3 wins +47 points
Allan 2 wins -9 points
Joe 1 win -19 points
Dale 0 wins -39 points
