Scottish Golf Croquet Championship 2011

11-12 June 2011, Alexandra Park

This year's Scottish Golf Croquet Championship took place earlier in the season than usual so as to precede - and give practice for - the World Golf Croquet Championship to be held in London in July.  And among the nine contestants were five World Championship players: James Hopgood, selected as the Scottish representative for the 2011 event; Jamieson Walker, a veteran of four previous World Championships; and Jane Morrison, Jackie Shannon and Jola Jurasinska, who had all played in the Women's World Championship.

The format consisted of an American block followed by a best-of-three knockout for the top four players and a Swiss consolation event.  The block play should have taken nine rounds of four games each, but because of an error by the manager it actually required an additional "mezzanine" round (containing one game, and played between rounds 5 and 6) to fit all the games in - round 9 being consequently reduced to three games.  Despite the scheduling hitch, the block was completed on the first day, leaving plenty of time for the remaining games on Sunday.

James, the highest ranked player, duly won all his games in the block, and went into a semi-final on Sunday morning against the fourth-placed player Graham Edwards, while Jane Morrison and Campbell Morrison contested the other semi-final.  Both semis were won in straight games, by James and Jane respectively, but the final went to a third game - Jane having taken the first 7-6 but lost 5-7 in the second.  The decider produced another 7-5 score in James's favour, and so he won the Walker Golf Croquet Bowl for the second year in succession.

Two players had notable reversals in their fortunes between the first and second days.  Campbell, after winning six out of eight on Saturday, lost all his five games on Sunday - perhaps demoralised by Jane's 7-3 win in the second game of their semi-final, in which she had a spectacular in-off at hoop 5 and then ran hoop 6 from a long distance with her next shot.  Bill Spalding, in contrast, won only three out of eight games on Saturday but then won five out of six on Sunday to come first in the Swiss.

The weather was mixed, with heavy rain for a time on Saturday but a bit of sunshine on Sunday.  And the Glasgow Club's hospitality was generous as usual, with tea and cake provided on Sunday afternoon.  Two non-playing contributors deserve special thanks: Joe Lennon for coming in to set the hoops on Saturday morning, and Eleanor Spalding for baking the aforesaid cake and the accompanying shortbread.
