East v West of Scotland 2013

1-2 June 2013, Meadows

This year's East v West match, held as usual at the beginning of June, got a mainly dry weekend with sunny intervals; there were showers on Saturday, but they were very brief.  A total of 11 players took part for the East of Scotland, and 12 for the West, though only two of the former and four of the latter played on both days.  The East had its fourth win in the 11-year history of the event, by 35 points to 20 - the biggest winning margin since the West's 33-11 victory in 2007.

CA of Ireland v SCA 2013

25-26 May, Carrickmines

The SCA narrowly failed to retain the Appleton Trophy in this year's match in Ireland, as the home side achieved a 13-12 victory.

Eight players flew from Edinburgh to Dublin on the day before the match, but only six of them were in the SCA team: Campbell Morrison (handicap -0.5), Bill Spalding (2), Fergus McInnes (3), Robert Inder (4.5), Janice Duguid (7) and Hamish Duguid (9).  Jane Morrison was accompanying Campbell, but playing for the opposite side; and Vivien Wightman came along with Robert as a supporter and to stay on for a couple of days' holiday after the match.

The Irish team comprised Ronán Rogerson (0), Nathaniel Healy (0), Jane Morrison (1), Evan Newell (0), Alan Looney (8) and Joe McGowan (9), with Benjamin Reeves-Smyth substituting for Evan on Sunday afternoon.

Basil Townsend Quaich 2013

5 May 2013, Auchincruive

Auchincruive offered a wild and windy but generally dry day for this year’s quaich.  David Arnot represented Auchincruive; Richard Sparrow, Glasgow; Alistair Malcolm, Kinross and Hamish Duguid, Edinburgh.  Each player played all three others in 18 point games.  The lawn was set out by Malcolm P W Smith and the extensive catering facilities of the Malcolm P W Smith Memorial Pavilion were enjoyed by players and spectators alike.

The lawn was reasonably fast after spring time tining and sanding, but there was little grass growth and some very tricky boundaries which deceived even David.  Everyone adapted quickly to the conditions and games generally finished well before the two and a half hour limit.  With a wide range of handicaps the Auchincruive bisque machines were in constant use.
